The English football league hierarchy is in the shape of a pyramid. It is basically a series of interconnected leagues for various football clubs in England. The English football league is a series of 140 leagues, containing over 480 divisions. The whole structural hierarchy of the football league depends on the concept of promotion and relegation. According to this concept, the most successful football clubs can rise to the pinnacle by exhibiting good sporting performance. So, the hierarchy is not constant and the deserving teams can make their place in the top levels of the hierarchy which include:

Premier league
The Premier league contains a single division and is comprised of 20 clubs. This league is also called as the top flight. The league is officially called as the Barclays Premier League, as it is being sponsored by the Barclays bank. The premier league is the most watched football league in the world. Each of the 20 members of the league act as shareholder and they all have their rights to cast their vote on issues such as contracts and rule changes etc.
All the clubs collectively elect a chairman, a chief executive and a board of directors in order to oversee the day to day operations of the league. The premier league has the highest revenue, in comparison to any other football league in the world. It brings a significant value to the English football and the broadcasting industry of the United Kingdom.
Football League Championship
This is in the second highest position of the English football league hierarchy. The league comprises of a total of 24 teams. The bottom three teams are relegated and the two topmost teams are automatically promoted.
Football League One
Consists of a team of 24 teams.From this level downwards the trend of relegation changes and at this level the four teams acquiring the four bottomost ranks are relegated.
Football League Two
Consists of a team of 24 teams.Here the lowest scoring two teams are relagated.
Conference National
Consists of 24 teams.Here the lowest scoring four teams are relagated.
Conference North and Conference South
Both the Conference North and Conference South consist of 22 teams each, running in parallel.
(Northern Premier League Premier Division, Southern Football League Premier Division, Isthmian League Premier Division)
All the three divisions comprise of 22 teams each, which run parallel to each other.
(Northern Premier League Division One North, Northern Premier League Division One South, Southern Football League Division One Central, Southern Football League Division One South and West, Isthmian League Division One North, Isthmian League Division One South)
Each of the above divisionsconsists of 22 teams each, running in parallel.
